Aloha and welcome to the Maui Pops. Our orchestra was founded in 2004 and is dedicated to presenting both light classical and contemporary pops music for Maui residents and visitors. We wish to entertain, educate and empower our listening audience to fully enjoy the broad spectrum of music written for our orchestra. And, as much as possible, we want to provide a fun, family-oriented musical experience to the children of Maui, as well as promote Hawai'i-based artists and entertainers. We hope this web site has all the information you might be seeking regarding the Maui Pops Orchestra. Make sure to check our Concerts Page for more detailed information about upcoming events.

We believe our 2014-2015 season is an exciting, diverse, and well-rounded program for audiences of all ages and musical interests. A short re-cap is as follows:

Children's Concert (October 21, 2014): Not open to the public/students only. The musical genius of the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart has amazed and enchanted people all over the world for over 250 years. Already a skilled pianist by the age of 5, he composed his first musical piece and continued composing and performing his entire life to great acclaim. The Maui Pops Orchestra will bring the music of this incredible youngster to the stage for our Maui-student audience, including a performance of a movement of a Mozart violin concerto by one of Maui’s gifted young violinists, 13-year-old Darius Soo Hoo.

Holiday Pops Concert (December 7, 2014): This concert will present appropriate seasonal music, some of which was composed in the 19th century. This traditional Holiday Pops concert is being enhanced this year by guest vocalist Doug LaBrecque. Mr. LaBrecque has had leading rolls in numerous Broadway shows, including Phantom of the Opera, Showboat, Oscar Hammerstein’s 100th Birthday Celebration, and many others. In addition, he has been a soloist with some of the world’s finest symphony orchestras. We are also introducing the Maui Pops Orchestra Chorus to add to the holiday festivities.

Broadway Pops Concert - A Rodgers and Hammerstein Celebration (January 25, 2015): By popular demand, we again present an all-Broadway program. This year features a program of Rodgers and Hammerstein favorites from 50 years ago, including many of the most loved and most familiar songs from The King and I, South Pacific, Showboat, The Sound of Music, and more. Guest vocalists Alli Mauzey and William Michals each have extensive Broadway credits and have performed with orchestras around the world. Our Broadway Pops concert will be an uplifting program, with the Maui Pops Orchestra and chorus supporting these superb vocal artists.

Maui Pops Presents Keola Beamer (February 22, 2015): This concert will include a diversity of works by Dmitri Shostakovich (a famous Russian composer early to mid 20th century), Edward Grieg (a famous Norwegian composer of the late 19th century), Aaron Copland (a leading American composer of the early-to-mid 20th century), and Morton Gould (an American composer from the mid-20th century). All of these names are familiar to concert goers. Our featured guest artist, Keola Beamer, is one of the premier singer/songwriters in Hawaii, and Master of the Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar. Keola established himself early as a leader of contemporary Hawaiian music when he wrote Honolulu City Lights, still one of the best selling recordings in the history of Hawaiian music. Kumu Hula Moanalani Beamer, his wife, will be joining Keola, making this a truly special program.

Maui Pops Goes to the Ballet (March 22, 2015): Verdi (a famous opera composer from late 19th century), Mendelssohn (a famous composer from the early 19th century), Stravinsky (a famous Russian composer from the early 20th century), and Delibes (a well-known French composer from the mid-to-late 19th century) are all featured in this concert. In addition, the Maui Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA) will partner with the Maui Pops Orchestra to present the comic ballet Coppelia with music by Delibes. This ballet was premiered in Paris in 1870, and has become one of the most popular ballets of all time. Selected scenes from the ballet will fill one half of the concert, with the Maui Pops Orchestra performing the music of Verdi, Mendelssohn, and Stravinsky during the other half.

We think our above selection of musical arrangements and guest artists for the 2014-2015 season will provide a well-rounded program of interesting and diverse performances. We hope you will agree.
